Phad is derived from hindi word pad which means read in english. In local dialect pad is called phad. Phad painting is such a painting which can be read. In this art story is narrated through the pictures. India is a religious country whenever the religion was deteriorated or defamed the incarnations took place in India and the god motivated the society with their life style and character. Phad painting is related to the life of incarnations, folk gods and heroes of the country. Which was sung by Bhopa’s with folk music showing one by one picture through folk poerty. That is why it is called phad.

The phad painting is unique because mythological events, folk tales and legend of Indian heros are depicted in such a way in it that they can be read very well, as well as it is completely hand made or handicraft.

History of Phad.


The cloth of Khadi and Silk is converted in the canvas with special process because of this process painting remains safe for a longer time in a original form. The colours used in the painting are very special. These colours are fully natural and found in the form of stones. These stones are ground in powder and mixed with murcury with natural mixture. That’s why these colours never fade. They always remain bright and original.

As formerly said these are based on incarnations, folk gods and heroes of the country.
The mythological Characters - Ramdala, Krishnadala. The traditional folk characters – Shree Devnarayan, Shree Pabu ji maharaj and Historical events.

Types of Phad.


This art is 600 years old. This is being painted by Joshi Family of Shahpura-311404 (Rajasthan-India). This art was proliferated by my family. This art was popularisd by my family in very excellent way. My father and his elder brother were honoured with National Award by President of India for this art. The heritage of phad art which was nurtured by my ancestors. I am one of the important part of this art in my family. It is a matter of pride for me.

It is matter of pride for shahpura that three maryters and heros of shahpura Shri Kesri Singh Barhath, Shri Joravar Singh Barhath and Shri Pratap Singh Barhath who were born in shahpura and they fought for the freedom of India. According to historical record shahpura was established on 14 December 1631 by Shri Sujan Singh Sisodia son of Maharaja Shri Suryamal on the name of Shahjaha who was The emperor of Delhi.

Shri Sujan Singh Sisodia was posted on highest place in the army of mughal and this area was awarded him as honour. phoolia pargana was it’s centre at that time and shahpura state was a revenue state. In 826 Vikram Samwat when Raja Ran Singh ji was on the throne of shahpura . The holy sant Ram Charan made it the centre of Ramsnehi sect. Now a days Shahpura is famous for international Ram snehi peeth and Ramdwara temple its architecture is very attractive. This is the place where yearly fair and Fooldol festival holds from Falgun Shukla ekadashi to Chetra Krishna shasthi. In this function lacs of people from country and abroad participate.
